Pofadder microbreccia

Pofadder microbreccia

Microbreccia from the Pofadder Shear Zone in South Africa. Previous mylonitization is visible in the breccia clasts. The host rock is a metagranite and the photomicrograph was taken under cross-polarized light with 25X magnification. The clasts are angular, showing that they have undergone little rotation and abrasion, but the classification schemes that do not include microbreccias would classify the rock as a cataclasite because of the small clast size.
