Champlain thrust chaotic breccia

Photomicrograph of a chaotic breccia from the Champlain Thrust fault in Vermont. The clasts are Cambrian dolostone from the hanging wall, and the matrix is most likely a mixture of dolostone and black shale from the footwall. According to Woodcock & Mort’s (2008) classification scheme, the fragments larger than 2 mm are considered clasts while the fragments smaller than 2 mm are considered part of the matrix. The rock is matrix-rich, with clasts that have been rotated, making this a chaotic breccia. This picture was taken under a magnification of 25x, under plane light.
