Basic User Training
Basic user training takes about 2 hours, and includes:
  • Basic overview of X-ray Diffraction
  • Running automated optics alignment and sample alignment routines
  • Selection and loading of sample holders
  • Setup run for powder Bragg-Brentano
  • Display the data, smooth and remove background
  • Itterative automated and directed searches to identify minerals present
  • Semi-quantitative estimates of mineral mode (quality of estimates depends strongly on sample)
Each user should bring a powdered sample for training (we will not have time to run all of them during training, but can practice packing sample holders with your typical material.) The powder must be sufficiently fine that there is no gritty feeling when it is rubbed between the fingers (approximately 10 microns.)

It is helpful if you know something about your sample before you start analyzing - an idea of some or all of the minerals present, and knowledge of mineral cleavages and how the powder crystals might orient themselves, along which crystal faces.

Email Christie to sign up for basic training, or check current rates. Check the calendar on the info page for scheduled upcoming sessions.

Advanced User Training
Advanced user training can be organized by appointment. Training times and rates vary, as training will be customized to individual user needs. Contact Christie for info.
